One-time UFC fighter Phil Baroni (10-7 MMA, 3-5 UFC) was recently arrested in Miamia, Fla., and charged with two misdemeanors and one felony, according to a filing posted on the the Miami-Dade County Clerk Web site.
Baroni, who had been fighting with PRIDE Fighting Championships since he was dropped from the UFC in February 2005, has been charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and — the most serious charge — threatening a public servant. In most cases, a “public servant” refers to a police officer.
According to the court documents, Baroni has been released from custody and has an arraignment hearing scheduled for April 30.
Baroni was arrested after he got into altercation with two men who were “totally disrespecting” him and who even went so far as kissing his girlfriend, according to a Sherdog.com Forum posting by Ken Pavia, who is Baroni’s agent.
Said Pavia:
A couple black guys, one who just did a 9yr stint in federal prison was totally disrepecting Baroni and his girlfriend….Baroni handled his business with the two guys, but ended up in the clink…gotta respect a man who takes up for his chick..
One of the jackoffs, both who were walking and cat calling Baroni’s chick actually just walked up to her on the street and kissed her in front of Baroni and it was on.
Baroni, who turns 31 next week, was one of the UFC’s most feared strikers when he debuted with the UFC in 2001. But after losing four straight fights (Matt Lindland, Evan Tanner twice, and Pete Sell), “The New York Bad Ass” was released by the organization.
After a subsequent win at Extreme Fighting Challenge 11, he went 5-2 while fighting in Japanese-based PRIDE from 2005-’06.
Currently, Baroni is slated to face Frank Shamrock at a June 22 pay-per-view event co-branded under the banners of Elite Xtreme Combat and Strikeforce Fighting Championship. UFC president Dana White recently told MMAWeekly Radio that he would make Baroni an offer to return to the UFC if he wins the fight.
