Former UFC regular Josh Neer (22-6-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC) defeated UFC/PRIDE Fighting Champions veteran Paul Rodriguez (9-8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) last night at GreenSparks Fighting Championship 5 near Des Moines, Iowa.
The main event capped off a 10-bout fight card that took place at the 7 Flags Event Center in Clive, Iowa.

Neer, who hasnít fought in the UFC since back-to-back losses to Josh Burkman (UFC 61) and Nick Diaz (UFC 62), was making his MMA debut at 155 pounds. It proved successful as he connected on a body punch that sent American Top Teamís Rodriguez to the canvas. Neer followed up with a series of elbow strikes before the referee stopped the bout at 1:38 of the first round.

It was a quality win for the 24-year-old Neer. Rodriguez, who suffered a first-round submission to Tony DeSouza at UFC 32, has a KO victory over Dennis Hallman on his resume (Hallman is the only fighter with two wins over former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes) and has fought professionally for nine years.

Neer trains with Miletich Fighting Systems in Iowa and has UFC victories over The Ultimate Fighter 2 welterweight winner Joe Stevenson and UFC veteran Melvin Guillard.

GreenSparks Fighting Championship is an Iowa-based organization that began promoting shows in 2006.
