Report: Thiago Tavares vs. Tyson Griffin Added to UFC 76

The UFC 76 event set for Sept. 22 in Anaheim, Calif., is starting to shape up. The latest names added to the fight card are UFC youngsters Thiago Tavares (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Tyson Griffin (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC).


The undefeated Tavares, 22, most recently scored a second-round submission victory (via triangle choke) over Jason Black back in April at Manchester’s UFC 70 show. Two months prior, he picked up a unanimous-decision win over Naoyuki Kotani at UFC Fight Night 9. The Brazilian could become a real lightweight contender with a victory in September.

He’ll take on Griffin, 23, whose controversial split-decision victory over Clay Guida at UFC 72 has already emerged as one of the best fights of 2007. A decision loss to Frankie Edgar at UFC 67 — another stellar fight — is the only blemish on his otherwise-perfect career.

UFC 76 takes place at the Honda Center. Other bouts scheduled for the event include Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine, Mauricio “Shogu” Rua vs. Forrest Griffin, and Diego Sanchez vs. Jon Fitch.
